Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) against female politicians remains a significant barrier to women’s full participation in politics, particularly in Illela Local Government Area, Sokoto State, where patriarchal cultural norms often marginalize women in public and political life (Garba & Tukur, 2024). Female politicians in this area are frequently subjected to physical, psychological, and sexual violence as a means of intimidation, silencing, or discrediting them (Musa & Ahmad, 2025). Despite laws and policies aimed at reducing violence against women, these acts persist due to inadequate enforcement, cultural attitudes, and the lack of support systems for victims. This study seeks to assess the prevalence, types, and impacts of gender-based violence faced by female politicians in Illela, and to understand how such violence affects their political careers and personal lives.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Female politicians in Illela Local Government Area face significant challenges due to gender-based violence, which undermines their political participation and stifles their ability to achieve political success. This violence, which includes threats, harassment, and physical abuse, often leads to the withdrawal of female politicians from the political scene and discourages other women from entering politics (Umar & Bello, 2023). This study explores the nature of gender-based violence faced by female politicians in Illela and the impact of such violence on their careers and mental well-being.

  • What types of gender-based violence do female politicians in Illela face?

  • How does gender-based violence impact the political careers and personal lives of female politicians in Illela?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Gender-based violence significantly affects the political career and participation of female politicians in Illela Local Government Area.

  • The types of gender-based violence faced by female politicians in Illela vary, with psychological violence being more prevalent than physical violence.

  • Female politicians who experience gender-based violence are more likely to withdraw from politics or reduce their level of participation.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The findings will be crucial for policymakers, civil society organizations, and advocacy groups working to address gender violence and promote women’s political inclusion.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the prevalence and impact of gender-based violence against female politicians in Illela Local Government Area, Sokoto State. Limitations include the potential underreporting of violence due to fear of retaliation and the sensitive nature of the topic, which may affect the willingness of respondents to participate in interviews.
